Mass agitation against Citizenship (Amendment) Bill

Doomdooma, May 28: In response to call by All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), Doomdooma Regional Students’ Union took out a procession on Monday at Doomdooma in protest against the Centre’s controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016. The students of the schools of Doomdooma and adjoining Rupaisiding area took part in large numbers in the procession which was taken out along the main thoroughfares of the town and they shouted slogans by displaying banners.

Later a meeting was held on National Highway No.37 near the statue of Jyoti Prasad Agarwala on the Railway level crossing which was addressed by AASU, Tinsukia District Committee President Binoy Dubey, Secretary Samarjyoti Gohain, Prakash Moran (All Moran Students’ Union), Durga Chetri (All Assam Gorkha Students’ Union), Suraj Bhumij (All Adivasi Students’ Association of Assam) among others.

TANGLA: In par with the state-wide protest against implementation of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, by a number of indigenous organisations, the Tangla unit of All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), took out a massive protest rally demanding scrapping of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016 in Tangla on Monday. The massive protest rally taken throughout Tangla town starting from Tangla HS playground was joined in unison by the people irrespective of caste, community and religion. Several other organisations including the All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU), All Koch Rajbongshi Students’ Union (AKRSU), All Rabha Students’ Union (ARSU), All Assam Gorkha Students’ Union (AAGSU), All Adivasi Students’ Association of Assam (AASAA) among others representing various ethnic groups of the State joined the protest programme. Addressing the rally, AASU Assistant General Secretary, Jayanta Kr. Bhattacharya demanded that both the Central and State governments should protect the interest of indigenous people in the State as their identity and security were being threatened by Bangladeshi intruders.

He stated that neither Hindu nor Muslim illegal migrants from Bangladesh would be allowed to be brought into State through the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, the student leader said. “Assam would not bear the burden of migrants after 1971 irrespective of the religion affiliations of the immigrants,” he said. Addressing the gathering of nearly 10,000 people including school students, ABSU vice president Dipen Boro reiterated the stand of the students’ body.

DEMOW: Under the banner of All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), Demow Regional Committee with Demow Xahitya Xabha, All Tai Ahom Students’ Union (ATASU), Demow Handball Club, All Assam Bengali Youth Students’ Federation (AABYSF), Demow Regional Committee, Brihattar Asomiya Yuba Mancha (BAYM), Marwari Yuba Mancha, Mahila Samittee, Demow Nagarik Mancha, Dehajan and Dekhari Sadar Masjid Committee, All Adivasi Students’ Association of Assam (AASAA), e-Rickshaw Association, Banamali Cultural Group, Swarna Silpi along with other organizations of Demow took out a protest rally on Monday from Demow Public Playground throughout Demow against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016. In the protest rally, Sarat Hazarika, Education Secretary of AASU, Gobin Phukan, Adviser of Sivasagar District Students Union along with other organizations leaders of Demow were present.
