Mass signature campaign against Citizenship (Amendment) Bill

RANGIA, May 13: Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) Rangia district and Rangia constituency committee and their sister organization, as well as local people, on Sunday opposed the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 through a mass signature campaign near Rangia Raijmel Bhavan and Rangia Bhutan bus station. Earlier they held a protest rally which paraded throughout Rangia town. A street corner meeting was also held in different places of Rangia town to protest the bill. Addressing the public, Ananta Deka, former MLA of Rangia constituency, urged the ministers and MLAs to stand by the people of Assam. He said that people were always greater than party and warned the Congress leaders not to play dual role. Foreigners issue must be solved within the jurisdiction of Assam Accord, he said and firmly opposed the said bill. AGP leaders Pankaj Lahkar, Abdul Zabbar, Parameshwar Buzarbaruah, Dinesh Das, Prabal Buzarbaruah and Leeladhar Saloi attended the protest.

On the other hand, different organizations and student bodies, including AJYCP, SMS, AASU, Rangia Press Club, Rangia College Students’ Union, Chamber of Commerce and representatives from other bodies like Lekhika Samaroh Samiti and Nataraj Natya Gosthi also took out a protest rally against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill Act, 2016 at Rangia on Sunday.

A large number of women spontaneously participated in the rally which started from Rangia Raijmel Swahid Krishak Bhavan through the main town via NT Road and finally culminated at the Raijmel Bhavan premises. Later, a meeting was also held where leaders from different organizations unanimously advocated against the amendment of the bill. A one-act play was also staged in this regard by the young artistes of Nataraj Natya Gosthi. A joint memorandum was also submitted to the Kamrup DC in this connection through the EAC, Riponjyoti Nath.
