Massive Clash broke out at BJP Rally in Kolkata’s Bepin Behari Ganguly Street, Police Baton Charge at Workers

Kolkata: A Massive clash broke out on Wednesday after Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers staged a protest rally in Kolkata with police using water cannons and teargas shells to disperse the mob.

As per news agencies, the BJP workers were baton charged on Bepin Behari Ganguly Street as they were marching towards Kolkata Police Headquarters in Lal Bazar to protest against alleged killings of saffron party workers under the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress government.

As per the sources, around one lakh people were expected to take part in the rally.

The march began from central Kolkata's Subodh Mullick Square and may move towards Lalbazar from different directions.

In 2017, the party had held another march to the city Police Headquarters, during which a scuffle broke out between a large number of BJP workers and Kolkata police.

It is to be noted that security was beefed today at all the major crossings including in the Lalbazar area which has turned into a fortress since morning in a bid to curb any untoward incident this time.

Barricades have been put up at all the important junctures across the nine possible entry points to Lalbazar, informed sources.

West Bengal Police on May 14 evening resorted to lathi-charge after a clash broke out between the alleged Trinamool Congress and BJP workers at the BJP National President Amit Shah’s roadshow in Kolkata.

As per reports, a two-wheeler was set on fire right at the gates of Vidyasagar College, about a km from Calcutta University.

Also, the Statue of Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar was vandalized at Vidyasagar College in the clashes that broke out at BJP President Amit Shah’s roadshow today.

NEDA convener and Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma were also present in the Amit Shah’s road-show.

It has also come to light the angry protesters had waved black flags in protest against the BJP president’s visit in the region.

Reacting to that later, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said, “I’ve learned that some BJP hooligans have vandalized Vidyasagar college. We will not let go of this easily. We will give a befitting reply.”

Mamata Banerjee added, “I am ashamed of this. They [BJP] have brought outsiders to riot in Kolkata. I ask our education minister to rush to the spot and check the situation of Delhi Gunda [hooligan] netas.”

Soon after the incident, the security of the BJP National President at Kolkata had been beefed up.
