Mathematics Training and Talent Search Programme Got Underway at Kohima Science College

Guwahati: A week-long Mathematics Training and Talent Search (MTTS) programme got underway here at Kohima Science College, Jotsoma from Monday. The programme is considered as the “most popular undergraduate/graduate training programme in Mathematics running in India.”

This is the first time the Mini-MTTS programme is being held in Nagaland, and the first time the programme is being hosted by a college instead of universities or institutes like IITs and NITs.

A total of 50 participants from reputed institutes and colleges from all over Northeast India are participating in the event which will go on till December 8, 2018. The resource persons for the programme are Prof. G. Santhanam from IIT Kanpur, Prof. Bhaba Kumar Sarma from IIT Guwahati and Dr Dhiren Kumar Basnet from Tezpur University.

Delivering the keynote address, Prof. Bhaba Kumar Sarma highlighted the history and the aims and vision of the innovative and prestigious programme. MTTS programmes, he said, stress critical thinking and logical reasoning, and the strategy adopted is ‘Think, Ask and Solve’. He expressed his happiness on having the programme in Nagaland, a place where “warmth was felt from the beginning.”

Principal, of Kohima Science College, Dr. Lily Sema welcomed the delegates, guest and participants. Dr. SN Pandey, the HOD of Mathematics Department, KSCJ also delivered a small speech while the inaugural programme was chaired by Jane Roseline Yimchunger.

Mathematics Training and Talent Search Programme (MTTS) is the most popular undergraduate/graduate training programme in Mathematics running in India. It conducts workshops of duration from 1 weeks to 4 weeks throughout the year in different locations in India. The students are selected from the region of the programme or from the national level depending on its aims. The MTTS Trust is formed for conducting these programmes. It also conducts teacher training programmes titled Pedagogical Training for Mathematics Teachers (PTMT) and other academic discussions benefitting a large class of mathematicians in India.
