Measures to Combat Acute Encephalitis Syndrom/Japanese Encephalitis in Tezpur

Tezpur: Secretary to the Health and Family Welfare department, Mallika Medhi on Thursday reviewed the various activities carried out by the District Task Force formed to combat Acute Encephalitis Syndrome/ Japanese Encephalitis in Sonitpur and Biswanath districts in the presence of Deputy Commissioner Narsing Pawar, Joint Director Health Services Dr. Krishna Kemprai, H & MO Dr. S.P. Bordoloi and other health department officials in a meeting held at the conference hall of the Deputy Commissioner’s office.

The senior government official took stock of the various measures initiated to combat and control the outbreak of JE in the district and stressed stepping up activities to contain the disease before it acquires an epidemic form. The Secretary also focused on proper reporting of JE cases by field-level health workers and directed officials of various line departments concerned to work concertedly in combating the disease.

Officials of the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme for AES/JE gave a detailed presentation on the subject and apprised the Secretary about the various steps being taken to control the disease, including early detection, routine vaccination, fogging, detection and treatment of patients and IEC activities.

Till date, 56 cases of AES and 10 cases of JE have been reported from Sonitpur district. So far one death due to JE has been reported from the district. The other nine cases have been treated in various hospitals across the district out of which a few cases have been discharged on recovery. On the other hand, 19 AES and 7 JE cases have been reported from Biswanath district so far.

The Secretary, while expressing satisfaction over the measures taken and activities carried out for control of the disease in the district, asked the health officials to strictly follow the SOP issued by the Government of India in this connection and asked the administration to step up IEC activities appealing to the people not to panic.

The Secretary also visited Kanaklata Civil Hospital, Tezpur Medical College and Hospital, Baptist Christian Hospital and Private Hospital during her visit and took stock of the facilities available in these institutions and enquired after the health of various patients admitted there.
