Meet on contemporary anthropology held in Guwahati

GUWAHATI: A three-day national seminar on Contemporary Anthropology and North East India was held in the Department of Anthropology, Cotton University, Guwahati from November 1 to November 3. The event, with active participation from more than 200 delegates from universities and institutes from all over the country and beyond explored the state of contemporary Anthropology and the challenges pertaining to North East India, a release stated.

Noted anthropologists, scholars, researchers and students from universities like Moskow, Dhakka, Calcutta University, NEHU, Ranchi University, Rajiv Gandhi University JNU, Jadavpur University, Sambalpur , Manipur, Nagaland, Tripura Vidyasagar , TM Bhagalpur University, Amity University IIT, Guwahati ,Deccan College Delhi University National School of Advance Studies, Bangalore Hyderabad, Rabindra Bharati University, Sikkim University, Visva Bharati, NERIM, St Xaviers College, Mumbai, Indian Institute of Dalit Studies, New Delhi, Tezpur University, Sports Authority of India, Assam University (Diphu Campus) Cancer Institute Chennai & Silchar , NIRD , TRI Assam North Bengal university participated in 18 academic sessions. The three-day seminar, with the support from Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), Indira Gandhi Manav Sangrahalay, Bhopal (IGRMS), Anthropological Survey of India , ICSSR-NERC, Oil India Ltd, AIRT&SC Assam and other organisations highlighted many new areas of research and called upon for a new approach to the state of contemporary anthropology in North East India.

Vice Chancellor of the Cotton University Prof BC Goswami while inaugurating the seminar, emphasised the significance of the study of Anthropology in its holistic approach to understand humankind in general and North East India in particular. Chief Guest of the Session, noted anthropologist. Prof. Ranjana Ray, formerly, Head, of University of Calcutta emphasised that the objective of the discipline of Anthropology right from its initial stage was meant for the wellbeing of the society at large. She called upon the conservation and proper study of tangible and intangible cultural heritage of different ethnic groups to The guest of honour Prof Rekha Das recounted her association with the department as a student and also as a faculty, the release added.
