Shillong: The situation in Umwali near Langpih (Lumpi) situated along the disputed area between Assam and Meghalaya remains calm. Following Thursday’s baton charge by Assam Police on the residents who aided the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MECL) workers in bringing in the electricity lines, the issue ignited an ostensible communal turn.

The videos that went viral and reactions is a testimony to the gravity of the situation. However, Superintendent of Police (SP) West Khasi Hills Bashan J Laloo told The Sentinel that the situation is under control and there are no reports of any untoward incidents. “We have sent additional men to the area to ensure that the status quo agreement arrived by both parties is adhered,” he said.

Fully monitoring the situation from his district headquarter, the SP said the situation improved after senior officials ensured that the people arrested by Assam Police would be released. Late reports said they have been released from Boko Police station.

Meghalaya Director General of Police (DGP) S Chandranathan in a telephonic interaction with The Sentinel confirmed the ground reports. “I have spoken to my counterpart as well as the Additional SP to ensure the release of the three people.”

The area under dispute is inhabited by two communities – the Khasis and the Gorkhas, – the former owing allegiance to Meghalaya and the latter to Assam.
