Meghalaya BJP submits memorandum to PM Modi opposing CAB

SHILLONG: During the BJP National Convention held at Ram Lila Maidan (Ground) New Delhi, BJP MLA Sanbor Shullai and AL Hek attended the convention and later handed over a memorandum to the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi along with the state BJP president Shibun Lyngdoh opposing the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016.

In the memorandum signed by Shullai, he said that the people of his constituency and the entire state is disappointed on the recent amendment brought in the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016, which has triggered a wide spread negative sentiment amongst the people of North Eastern states.

“This Bill will further aggravate the prevailing problem of influx of illegal migrants from Bangladesh which the state has long been grappling with since independence,” Shullai said.

He pointed out that the bill undermines the on-going updation of 1951 NRC which like the Assam Accord also uses the 24 March 1971 cut-off date to determine the list of Assam citizen, the new Bill will nullify the objective of the NRC as well as the foundation of Assam accord as it has a cut-off date of 31 December 2014.

Stating that Meghalaya shares an international porous boundary of approximately 443km, he said, “The people of Meghalaya fear that the Bill will irrevocably dilute the strength of the indigenous population.”

He also said that the implementation of the bill will adversely affect the tribal belt of Meghalaya. “This bill will further encourage illegal influx to the state of Meghalaya who will misuse the law to obtain citizenship in the country,” he said. “The proposed implementation of the bill has caused widespread resentment amongst the people of my state and North East as a whole and as such has made me reconsider my allegiance with the party and further the bill was pass not taking into consideration the plight of the people of North East and this shows negligence of the national party towards the people of North East,” he said. In the memorandum, Shullai also requested the central government to reconsider the implementation of the bill in North Eastern states of omit Bangladesh from the proposed bill failing which he shall have no ither option but to take a strong decision considering the plight of the people of Meghalaya.
