Meghalaya Governor Tathagata Roy Seeks Comments on Four Passed Bills

SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Governor Tathagata Roy has sought the views and comments of the state government on the four bills passed by the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC).

The four bills includes, the KHAD (as adapted from the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation, 1873) Regulation, 2018, KHAD (Constitution of Subordinate Council of Traditional Chiefs and Headmen) Rules, 2018, United Khasi-Jaintia Hills District (Establishment of Town Committee) (Second Amendment) Rules, 2018 and KHAD (Khasi Social Custom of Lineage) (First Amendment Bill, 2018.

It may be mentioned that in a letter sent by PS Kharkongor Deputy Secretary to the Governor of Meghalaya, Raj Bhavan, Shillong to the Commissioner and Secretary, District Council Affairs department government of Meghalaya has informed that the Governor had received a letter signed by the president of STIEH, requesting him to assent the bills.

The four bills have been forwarded to the state government so that the matter be examined by the government.

“We appreciate that the Governor has taken up the bills passed by the district council seriously and we are hoping that the government will give its views and comments on the four-bill so that the Governor can give his assent,” KHADC CEM HS Shylla told reporters here on Thursday. Shylla also stated that there is a need to constitute the Synjuk Ki Rangbah Kur (A conglomeration of clan leaders). “If this is realized it will be a very strong body of both clans from Khasi and Jaintia and for the purpose of protecting the indigenous rights of the people,” he said.
