Meghalaya has potential in agriculture, tourism sectors: CM Conrad K Sangma

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma when unfurling the national flag at the Polo Ground on the glorious occasion of the 72nd Independence Day yesterday said the state has immense potential for development in the fields of agriculture, tourism, education and urged the people to protect the environment of the state.

Sangma said that development of agriculture in Meghalaya would contribute employment opportunities to people also promoting food security for the state as well as increase the economy of the farmers.

This is Sangma’s maiden Independence Day speech since he has become the Chief Minister of Meghalaya in March.

According to CM, tourism is one of the prime sectors of the state government, as it would also furnish employment to the people. He stated that the state government would make comprehensive efforts in order to offer quality education in Meghalaya.

Sangma during his speech said, "One of the focus areas of governance is to maximize agriculture and horticulture potentials and bring all-round benefits for all stakeholders. It will generate employment and boost income,". He further said,"There is a huge potential for promoting eco-friendly tourism in Meghalaya. The tourism industry has huge potential to create employment for our youth."

Sangma by following the guidelines of the Election Commission did not deliver any political speech recounting the achievements of his Government considering the upcoming bye-poll in which he is contesting. He is contesting the bye-election to be held in August 23 in South Tura constituency, where the seat was vacated by his sister Agatha K Sangma. Conrad Sangma, who was elected MP from Tura Lok Sabha seat in 2016 by-election, was sworn in as the chief minister of Meghalaya in March following the National People’s Party (NPP) led coalition came to power in the state.
