‘Mental problems still treated as taboo in society’: Dr. Samiul Akhtar Borborah

LAKHIMPUR: “Mental problems are still treated as taboo in our society. The main reason is the shortage of sufficient psychiatrists and lack of adequate awareness among the people of Assam. Despite drastic development of mental health science in contemporary times, the people of the State are unable to avail its benefits effectively till date,” stated Dr. Samiul Akhtar Borborah in an awareness programme on mental health held at North Lakhimpur Press Club on Tuesday.

The programme titled ‘Mental Health Awareness at Workplace’ was organized by the District Mental Health Programme (DMHP), Department of Psychiatry of North Lakhimpur Civil Hospital. Attending as the resource person, psychiatrist and DPM of DMHP, Dr. Borborah elaborated the development of mental health science during the second half of the 20th century world as well as in the State at present. In his analytical lecture, Dr Borborah highlighted the different types of mental problems and the treatment methods of panic attacks, bipolar disorder, depression, eating disorders, obsessive compulsive disorders, personality disorders, post-traumatic stress disorders, psychosis and neurosis, addiction related disorders and sexual disorders.

He stressed organizing awareness programmes to manage stress at workplace and to cure the mental problems which might lead an affected person to commit suicide in the ultimate state. “Enhancement of knowledge, building of capacity, regular practice of physical exercise and yoga can control stress by which a person is usually affected nowadays in his busy life,” he stated.
