MHRD rejects Tripura's plea for TET relaxation

Agartala, May 31: What appears to be a major setback for the Left Front government in Tripura, the Union Ministry for Human Resource Development has turned down its plea to give one time relaxation in cut off mark and professiol degrees for appearing in Teachers’ Eligibility Test.

The state government has made this appeal in the wake of a Supreme Court verdict declaring appointment of 10,323 teachers as illegal for not complying these conditions in new education policy while giving them appointment.

As per new education policy obtaining 50 per cent mark in Higher Secondary Examition and having B Ed or D Ed degree are mandatory for appearing in TET examition and appointment as teacher.

The HRD ministry had given the state one year relaxation before the new law came into force but the state government did not avail this opportunity. Instead they have issued appointment to 10,323 teachers after expiry of this period violating the law.

Several eligible candidates challenged these appointments in the Tripura High Court and a bench headed by the then Chief Justice Deepak Kumar Gupta declared these appointments as illegal.

The state government proceeded before the apex court seeking relief but the division bench of the Supreme Court upheld the High Court verdict and said all these appointments will be discontinued after December 31, 2017.

The court also instructed the state government to initiate conducting fresh TET examition by May 2017 so that the appointment process can be completed by December and the schools don’t suffer.

The state government applied for relaxation as most of these teachers don’t have requisite qualification.
