ITANAGAR: A seven-year-old girl was allegedly raped and murdered at Chessa village under Sonajuli in Papum Pare district. Her body was found Sunday morning at around 8:30 am by the local residents of the village.

Earlier on Saturday, the parents of the victim had lodged a missing report with police, when their daughter failed to return home from school. Capital SP M Harsha Vardhan informed that the victim was a non-Arunachalee girl and a resident of Assam. However, her body was recovered from the Arunachal side of the boundary which is demarcated by a road only, he added.

He also informed that the Assam police under North Lakhimpur SP are investigating the case but as the incident took place in Arunachal side, the police here will cooperate in every way possible.

He added the body has been handed over to the victim's family after formalities.

On reports of vandalism in a police outpost under Banderdewa circle, Vardhan said that after the body was recovered, some agitated individuals were trying to give it an inter-state colour and pelted stones.

The SP added that the situation is normal now and Arunachal police has launched an investigation to identify those involved in the incident.
