Shillong: It is certain that Mukul Sangma will contest the Lok Sabha polls from Tura and the chosen nominee from Shillong is the two-time sitting MP Vincent C Pala, as reported by The Sentinel. Meanwhile, the AICC screening committee on Wednesday endorsed the candidature of Mukul Sangma and Vincent Pala and has sought the approval of the central election committee’s (CEC) approval.
There were three aspirants for the Tura seat and Mukul Sangma never applied for the party ticket. However, as reported by this newspaper, the Congress high command wanted the former Chief Minister to take over the mantle because of its assessment that he could over the bastion held by late PA Sangma and his two offspring’s.
While it is a matter of formality for the AICC central election committee to endorsed the names of the duo for the two seats in Meghalaya, the views of the AICC national spokesperson Tzarita Laitphlang was sought. Did the nomination of Mukul Sangma who never applied for the party ticket is in contravention of the party convention? To this, she said, “The names will be formally announced on March 15 and I will answer the question after that.”
Sources inside the AICC said that it is a mere formality to declare Mukul Sangma and Vincent Pala’ name. Both of them are camping in New Delhi.
Without waiting for the party’s official announcement, the Congress will kickstart it’s campaign by Saturday at Resubelpara in North Garo Hills district. Zenith Sangma, the MPCC spokesperson and younger brother of Mukul Sangma stated over phone, “ Our campaign will be intensive during the short time period that we have.”
Similarly, Vincent H Pala was again re-nominated as the party candidate from the Shillong Lok Sabha. Former Home Minister HDR Lyngdoh and former MLA Kennedy Khyriem also vied for the Shillong seat. “The High Command didn’t want to fiddle much but looked at the winnibility factor”, stated an AICC source.
