Muri Linggi scales Mount Everest

Itanagar, May 17: Muri Linggi of Roing in Lower Dibang Valley district of Arunachal Pradesh has earned the distinction to become the third woman from the state and second from the district to summit Mount Everest after Anshu Jamsenpa and Tine Mena.

Fourty-year-old Linggi scaled the world’s highest peak at 8 am on May 14 last, according to an official report from the district.

A mother of four daughters, Linggi’s Everest expedition was flagged off by Rajya Sabha Member Mukut Mithi at Roing, the headquarters of the district on April 5 this year.

At the flag off ceremony, Linggi had disclosed that Tine Mena, the first Everester of the state, from the same district has been her inspiration since she started her mountaineering career in 2013. Set out from her hometown Roing to Kathmandu on April 7, she started her Mount Everest expedition on April 12 from Lukla. She reached the base camp on April 20.

Her attempts to move forward with the expedition were foiled due to inclement weather. She again started for the summit on May 10 at 1 am in the morning. After four days of strenuous trekking, she scaled the world’s highest peak on May 14 at 8 in the morning, the report said.

Linggi did her basic course in mountaineering from the National Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports (NIMAS), Dirang in West Kameng district of the state in 2013 and was a part of the women expedition team to climb Peak Menthosa at Lahaul and Spiti in Himachal Pradesh.

She also completed her advanced mountaineering course from Darjeeling in 2016 and climbed the Gorichen Peak in October 2017.
