Musician and actor Durlav Chandra Saikia passes away

Tezpur: Musician, singer and actor Durlav Chandra Saikia passed away at his Kumargaon Sankar Mandir residence on Wednesday morning. He was 94 and was suffering from old-age ailments for some time. Saikia is survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter, besides a host of relatives.

He was closely associated with Sudhakanta Dr Bhupen Hazarika, Kalaguru Bishnu Prasad Rava, Natasurya Phani Sharma and Rupkonwar Jyotiprasad Agarwala. Saikia was also associated with Baan Theatre, was former president of Tarun Asom Sangha, life member of Tezpur Station Club, ABACA (Nameri), Sankar Mandir and several socio-cultural organizations.

Tezpur Xahitya Sabha, Sonitpur Press Club, Baan Theatre, Karunamoee Kala Niketan, Tezpur Station Club and hundreds of cultural activists, social workers, members of various cultural groups and organizations, local artistes and others paid floral tribute to him and also condoled his demise. His cremation was performed at Hazarapar in the presence of a huge gathering. Paying respect to this great personality, veteran actor Arun Nath said that Saikia was not only a musician and actor but also a very amiable person and the contribution he had made in the field of social and culture was truly outstanding and unforgettable.
