‘Mute spectators to crime simply encourage anti-social elements’

DIGBOI, May 14: “Leaders and top brass at the apex body of various terrorists groups across the country, including one in Assam, have been leaving no stone unturned to educate their children in good schools while ironically they propagate the other way round theory for other children and youth to lift arms and become rebels,” remarked Dibajyoti Saikia, social activist and secretary general of the social organization Brothers during his address in an awareness programme organized at the VDP conference hall in Digboi.

Saikia stressed real, quality and value-based education that teaches a sense of self-respect and respect for others as one of the remedies to mitigate the menaces of growing crimes on women and children.

The special awareness programme, basically meant to create awareness among people on various deep-rooted socio-cultural evils and threats, was organized by VDP Digboi in association with district police. Members and representatives of VDPs, women VDPs, representatives of various socio-cultural organizations and office bearers of Digboi Town Committee were present.

Saikia has been relentlessly working for past one month across Assam to create awareness among the people, particularly in rural pockets, on various social evils like atrocities on women and children, terrorism, child labour, superstition and witch hunting. Saikia, who has also been a national member of the core committee of Team Anna, said that self-centered individuals in society lead their lives in a safe zone by being silent observers and ignoring the increasing crimes and perverted acts committed around them. Such people ought to shoulder more responsibility in this present deteriorating scenario.

“Mute spectators to crime simply encourage the anti-social elements to accelerate their activities. One must act at once either by informing the police, calling the nearby people or by individual resistance when any act of perverted form is being committed in public or private place instead of choosing a safe road to escape,” he said.
