Nagaland starts Register of Indigenous Inhabitants of Nagaland, aims completion in 60 days

Kohima: The process of preparing list of indigenous people of the state has kick-started in Nagaland as the government made an official announcement of the register of all indigenous inhabitants on Wednesday. The Nagaland Chief Secretary Temjen Toy made this announcement.

Like Assam NRC, the Register of Indigenous Inhabitants of Nagaland (RIIN) will help the indigenous people of the land to prove their identity and detect the illegal foreigners who have been settled down in the state after December 1, 1963. Notably, it was the day when Nagaland had become a full-fledged state and hence, the final limit of detecting indigenous and foreigners has been considered as the same day.

Temjen Toy said, “Currently such certificate is being issued randomly but the RIIN will ensure efficiency and streamline the entire process, while also providing accurate data of the indigenous inhabitants in the state.”

This has also been stated by the government official that once the list of names registered in the RIIN is issued, the indigenous people will be issued with indigenous inhabitant certificates. Once the certificates are issued, all other certificates of citizenship or identity will become invalid.

The preparation of the list will be done on the basis of extensively done house-to-house survey. The official records will also be considered for the preparation of the list in which the supervision of the district administration will also be sought.

A notification on the same announcement was issued on June 29 by the Nagaland Home Commissioner R Ramakrishnan. The notification had mentioned it that the process of registration will commence from Wednesday and will be complete in duration of 60 days.

Government has also set up a number of specified teams who are being formed on village and ward levels. These teams will be responsible for house-to-house enumeration after a final review meeting of different committees. The review meeting will be held at the chief secretary level.

The RIIN can also be related to the National Register of Citizens (NRC) which is currently being updated in Assam, but the Nagaland version is expected to be more efficient as certificates will be issued to the genuine indigenous people of the state after the completion of the process.
