Narendra Modi assures NorthEast of rights protection

From a Correspondent

New Delhi: A day after the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 was passed in the Lok Sabha, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said the rights and opportunities of the people of Assam and the rest of the Northeast will be protected. Aware of the fact that the northeastern States have been restive over the Bill, Modi made that assurance from Solapur in Maharashtra.

"The Bill has cleared the decks for grant of Indian citizenship to the sons and daughters of Mother India residing in Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan. After seeing the ups and downs of history, these brothers and sisters of ours want to be a part and parcel of India," said Modi, while addressing a programme there.

Referring to the constitutional amendment Bill providing 10 percent reservation for economically backward unreserved people, Modi said it's a historic step for the uplift of the poor as well as a reflection of the government's commitment to sabkaa saath, sabkaa vikaas.
