National Press Day observed across Assam

SIVASAGAR: “Those people are respected and remembered who contributed for the for the welfare for society with devotion and sacrifice. A society develops through their contributions. They remain as ideal by virtue of their dignity and works during lifetime.” This was observed by Hrishikesh Goswami, press adviser to the Chief Minister while speaking at the National Press Day function as chief guest, organised by the department of Directorate of Information and Public Relations in association with District Information and Public Relations, Sivasagar at the Yuva Dol here on Friday.

Citing the examples of Socrates, Galileo, Martin Luthar King and Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, Goswami said that the ideals and their works during lifetime, have left an immense impact and contributed towards the development of human civilization, and made them immortal in the hearts of masses. Goswami said the holding of this event offers opportunity to the mediapersons to go in for self-analysis or self-introspection as to what they can do for the greater cause of the society.

On journalism ethics, Goswami said it should be self-imposed and inculcated as an internal quality guided by fairness, impartiality and truth. Dr Abhijit Bora, HoD, Public Relations and Journalism Department, Tezpur University, who was delivering a speech on the topic, ‘Ethics of Journalism: Challenges in Digital age, said that journalism in this digital era going through massive challenges.

“Journalistic ethics and challenges in the age of digital era can be overcome when both sides of the story are projected to put things in proper perspectives before the viewers and audiences with devotion and honesty towards their work,” he added.

DHUBRI: National Press Day was observed under the auspices of Dhubri District Information Public Relation Office here at Dhubri Circuit House Conference hall in a befitting manner on Friday. As part of the programme, a seminar was held on ‘Duty and Responsibilities of Journalists in preserving the Environment’. Speaking in the seminar as an appointed speaker, Prof (Rtd), Girindra Nath Goswami spoke at length on the role, duty and responsibility of media in preserving the environment.

A senior journalist of a channel, Jyotirmoy Chakraborty was jointly felicitated by Dhubri District Development Commissioner, Banashree Nath and Giridra Nath Goswami for the service in the field of journalism for last 20 years with utmost dedication and sincerity. The meeting was also addressed by host of mediapersons and officials including Dhubri District Development Commissioner, Banashree Nath, Executive Engineer of Dhubri district Public Health Engineer, J. Sarma, and president of Bilasipara Press Club, Moslemuddin Ahmed.

Earlier objective of the meeting was explained by District Information and Public Relation Officer, Bikash Sarma and floral tribute was paid at the portrait of only photo journalist, late Tapan Kumar Roy, who died on October 14 this year. A condolence message was handed over to his son in the meeting recalling Roy’s contribution in photo journalism for last forty years.

JORHAT: Along with the rest of the country, Jorhat journalists, educationists, litterateur, students, teachers from the Mass Communication department of Assam Women University and members from Jorhat Press club took part in the day at the Jorhat Press Club which was presided by Niranjan Mahanta, the president of the club here on Friday. Prominent writers, columnists and senior journalists like Dr. Basanta Goswami, Taj-Uddin Ahmed, Lalit Bora, PK Singh, Samiran Bordoloi, Dr. Tapan Dutta, Smita Bhattachatyya and Dushyanta Mabdab Sarma took part and spoke on the occasion. Dr. Basanta Kumar Goswami, former Asom Sahitya Sabha general secretary asked the journalists to create and take respectable position in the society and to play a very positive role for the greater interest of the society.

MANGALDAI: Darrang district administration in collaboration with District Information and Public Relation Office and Darrang District Committee of Assam Press Correspondents Union (APCU) organized a function to observe the countrywide celebration of National Press Day. Taking part in the function organized at the conference hall of the DC’s office, Darrang Deputy Commissioner Ashok Kumar Barman spoke on the significant role of the press in building a society with positive thought and creative writing.

Speaking elaborately on this year’s theme “Ethics in Journalism: its challenges in Digital Era” he highlighted the big challenges being faced by the press and appealed all mediapersons to continue their service and role like a watch dog with moral courage. He also laid stress on the need of investigative journalism. Lecturer of Assamese department of Sipajhar College Dr. Prasanna Kumar Nath delivered the key note speech on the topic.

District Development Commissioner Sweety Gogoi Kalita and Additional Deputy Commissioner Pankaj Chakravarty taking part in the function and spoke on the need for bold journalism with deep study and ethics. Media person Abdul Khalek, Ganesh Dutta and Mukut Raj Sarma also spoke on the function.
