National Register of Citizens (NRC) Our Topmost Priority: Government

GUWAHATI: The State Government on Thursday announced in the State Assembly that completion of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) is its topmost priority. Taking part in Cut Motion on Panchayat and Rural Development, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary said, “Only NRC will ensure the protection of the ‘jati, mati, bheti’ of the Assamese people.”

Minister Patowary further stated, “As quite a large number of government employees was involved in the NRC updating process, the panchayat elections in the State was slightly delayed this year. Actually, work related to the local polls was taken up only after the draft NRC was published. We did not delay it purposefully.’

Dwelling on the local polls, he said, “The AGP regime under Prafulla Kumar Mahanta could not hold the panchayat elections due to the prevailing law-and-order situation. However, the then Chief Minister took bold steps against extremism in the State.”

On the other hand, sharply criticizing the Congress rule, Minister Patowary said, “The Congress Government could hold the local polls primarily because of the real bold steps taken earlier by AGP Government against the insurgent groups active in Assam.”

Reflecting on the Indira Awas Yojana (IAY), Minister Patowary said, “More than three lakh IAY houses were incomplete during the Congress rule. What is more, during their time such houses were also owned by some government employees despite the fact they already had tin-roofed houses of their own. However with the change of guards in Dispur, we have completed more than 2.75 lakh of such houses.”

During the BJP-led coalition government, the central allocation in MGNREGA scheme has increased.
