National workshop on Sports  Law in Guwahati on July 21

GUWAHATI, July 18: A national workshop on ‘Sports Law and Management’ is going to be held in Guwahati on July 21. The workshop is being hosted jointly by University Law College, Gauhati University and Studio Nilima, an NGO.

Disclosing this before the media, senior advocate Niloy Dutta, who is a member of the governing body of Studio Nilima, said that several experts on law, including Professor Hayden Opie AM, Senior Fellow, Melbourne Law School, Retired Justice AP Misra, Manan Kumar Mishra, Chairman, Bar Council of India, senior advocate of Calcutta High Court Usha Nath Banerjee, Justice Ujjal Bhuyan, judge, Gauhati High Court are going to take part in the workshop. He said that a few top officials of different sports organizations, including Amitabh Chaudhary, acting secretary of BCCI, Anirudh Chaudhary, treasurer of BCCI, Subhash Basumatary, Regional Director of Sports Authority of India, will also take part in the daylong workshop. The organizer is also going to felicitate Anshu Jamsenpa, who scaled Everest for record fifth time.

Hayden, who was present in today’s media briefing, said, “Trade and commerce are gradually increasing in sports bodies and it increases the demand for people who are well-versed with laws, rules and regulations that govern the conducts of sports. I’m well aware of the fact that the north-eastern region is now dominating Indian sports, also at the international level. It’s the time local sports persons and sports administrative personnel gathered necessary information on sports law and management so as to stay away from unnecessary troubles.”

Earlier, Studio Nilima submitted a proposal to Gauhati University to introduce a course in sports law recently. Dr J Bora, the Principal of Gauhati University Law College who was also present in the media briefing, confirmed that Gauhati University is scheduled to introduce the course from next academic session. The media briefing was also attended by retired justice Brojendra Prasad Katakey, secretary of Assam Cricket Association Pradip Buragohain and Apurba Sharma, Chairman, Executive Committee, Bar Council of India.
