Neemati ferry lessees directed to ensure safety of passengers

FROM OUR  CORRESPONDENT

JORHAT, April 9: Lessees of the ferries of Neemati river-port were today directed by the Jorhat district administration to ensure the safety of each of the passengers-on-board , travelling between Majuli and Jorhat through the waterways of the mighty Brhamaputra. As several deficiencies were observed by an inspection team today the administration strictly ordered the operators of ferries which did not have sufficient number of life-jackets.

"We found only 15 to 20 life-jackets in each of the ferries that carry over 100 passengers during the single journey. It was shocking," said an officer of the district administration.

Besides, lack of adequate ticket-counters was also observed by the inspection team. Besides directing the lessees for the effective implementation of safety measures the officers also asked all the lessees to open ticket-counters for the passengers' help.
