NEIGRIHMS introduces latest facility for renal biopsies

SHILLONG: NEIGRIHMS is the only Government health facility in North East for Renal biopsies with facility for immunoflourescence.

This was informed by Head of Department pathology Prof Vandana Raphael during a review meeting. The department has developed transmission electron microscopy facility to further support the diagnosis in case of renal disorders.

Besides the department is catering to high-end diagnostic services like fluorescent in-situ hybridization for leukemia and breast cancers, Flow cytometry for immunophenotyping of leukemias which are either done free of cost or with very minimal charges.

Immunohistochemistry using more than 60 antibodies are regularly used for the accurate typing of neoplasm.

The Department of Pathology has various sections including Histopathology, Cytopathology and Hematopathology and Clinical Pathology giving 24 hours services along with subspecialty sections like Renal pathology, Neuropathology, Gastro intestinal Pathology, Immunopathology, Oncopathology and Dermatopathology.

Prof Raphael further informed that the Department developed Research and Development Lab which is currently catering to the high end diagnostic services to all sections of society.

MD Pathology which started in the year 2009 got recognition from MCI in the year 2012 and 15 postgraduate students have completed their degree from the department and has taken up positions as Faculty in Pathology, Consultant Pathologist in prestigious hospitals and some have pursued further studies as DM in clinical Hematology, Fellowships in Molecular Hematology etc from prestigious institutions.

The Director Prof (Dr.) D.M. Thappa appreciated the functioning of the department under the headship of Dr. Raphael.

He informed that the administration has adopted the least possible service charges keeping in view the affordability of the people of North East. He advised the faculty of the department to ensure hassle-free investigations in future also despite the everyday increasing service load on the department.
