GUWAHATI: A high-level students’ delegation comprising the North East Students’ Organization (NESO) and the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) on Sunday called upon the leaders of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) and the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in New Delhi seeking their support to prevent passage of the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019 in the Rajya Sabha.

NESO Advisor Samujjal Bhattacharjya while appealing to all non-BJP political parties to oppose the Bill, said the NESO and AASU would leave no stone unturned to prevent passage of the Bill in the Rajya Sabha.

Among other political parties, the NESO and AASU representatives met leaders of Janata Dal (United) and Biju Janata Dal (BJD) in New Delhi. The students’ leaders will be camping in Delhi for the next few days.

The Janata Dal (United), an ally of the ruling NDA at the Centre has announced that the party would vote against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, in the Rajya Sabha. The JD (U) led by its secretary-general KC Tyagi recently met leaders of Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), AASU, NESO and 30 other indigenous organizations to lend support in their fight against the proposed legislation. The controversial Bill is currently awaiting approval or rejection in the Rajya Sabha.
