SHILLONG, March 6: Conrad K Sangma was formally sworn in as the new Chief Minister of Meghalaya on Tuesday. He along with 11 other Cabinet Ministers were administered the oath of office by the State Governor Ganga Prasad in the sprawling lawns of the Raj Bhavan in the presence of the Union Home Minister Rajth Singh, Assam Chief Minister Sarbanda Sonowal, Aruchal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu, Assam Fince Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, NDPP chairperson Neiphi Rio besides the outgoing Chief Minister Mukul Sangma and former MPCC chief DD Lapang. BJP tiol president Amit Shah was also present during the 45 minutes swearing in ceremony.

The newly formed Government headed by the tiolist People’s Party (NPP) also witnessed 11 other members of the Legislative Assembly taking oath as Ministers. They include four from the NPP, mely Prestone Tynsong, James K Sangma, Sniawbhalang Dhar and Comingone Ymbon. The others comprising  Metbah Lyngdoh, Lakmen Rymbui and Kymen Shylla belong to the United Democratic Party (UDP). The People’s Democratic Front (PDF) has two representations in the Cabinet in Hamletson Dohling and Banteidor Lyngdoh while the BJP is being represented by Alexender Laloo Hek and the HSPDP by Samlin Lyngdoh.

The composition of the Conrad Sangma Ministry is on expected lines since all the political constituents of the coalition Government have representations in the 12-member Cabinet.

However doubts persist on whether the coalition Government will last, given the history of Meghalaya polity where no political party alliance has lasted for more than two years. However, the new Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma in a brief exclusive chat with The Sentinel said, “We are taking everybody along and we have a common objective to take the State forward.” He exuded confidence that the past experience will not be repeated in view of the anti-Congress mandate that has been shown by the electorates in the just concluded elections.
