New guidelines issued for city buses by RTA

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI: District Transport Office (DTO), upon the various incidents and complaints regarding city buses, has released a set of rules to be effective immediately. The daily commute of Guwahatians, is often a cause of much road hassle, even among the commuters themselves due to long halts in stoppages.

The rules laid down by DTO at a press meet on Thursday include route formulation of buses to avoid congestion. The buses will not be able to halt at every stoppage which means that they can only halt at alternate stoppages. Route numbers will be displayed on each bus to recognize the stopping spots.

DTO has confirmed that the city buses cannot halt at one spot for more than 2 minutes. The 22 existing bus routes will be increased to 37 and drivers will have to fix a photograph of themselves on the front glass which should be visible from a distance of 30 meters.

Collector of Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC), who was present at the meeting, directed that necessary steps should be taken for route wise numbering of stoppages in consultation with the DTO and the Secretary of Regional Transport Authority (RTA), Kamrup (M).

Upon the existing OLA, UBER cab problems, Chairman of RTA gave directions to DTO and Secretary of RTA to issue permit only if owners surrender their existing permits before the concerned authorities as per MV Act and Rules. He has also given directions to register un-registered e-rickshaws and issue driving licence to the drivers.

Taking the public grievances into account, to ensure better service, DTO has urged the bus owners not to engage any handyman and conductor in the city buses as well.
