No alliance with AIUDF: Ripun Bora

No alliance with AIUDF: Ripun Bora

Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Sept 21: As if following in former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi’s footsteps, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president and Rajya Sabha MP Ripun Bora has said that the Congress is in no way going to ally with the AIUDF that has its existence ‘only in papers’.

The statement from Bora is a direct response to AIUDF president Badruddin Ajmal’s statement on Thursday that his party is keen to ally with the Congress in Assam since both the parties are members of the grand alliance (mahagadbandhan) at the national level.

Talking to the media in Guwahati on Friday, Bora has admitted that the Congress and the AIUDF are among the parties who have stitched a grand alliance at the national level. “However, that doesn’t mean that we’re going to stitch an alliance with the AIUDF in Assam. We’ve left the issue of an alliance with the AIUDF to our workers at the grassroots level, MLAs, MPs and former MLAs. None of them favours an alliance with the AIUDF. We’ve already met party president Rahul Gandhi on this issue and made him clear that we don’t want alliance of any sort with the AIUDF in Assam. Rahulji has assured us that without the opinion from the State PCC, the high command is not going to impose its decision on us. The party high command has realized what we mean to say,” Bora said.

Bora said: “There’s no possibility of any alliance with the AIUDF – neither in the Lok Sabha poll, nor in the Assembly poll in the State. The AIUDF has its existence in paper only. Many of their party leaders have joined the Congress. The minorities in Assam aren’t with the AIUDF now. They’ve realized as to how Ajmal deceived them. The minorities in Assam are now with the Congress. The AIUDF is a weak party, and we’re not keen to stitch any alliance with a weak party.”
