Shillong: Nongkhnum island, the second river island in Asia and located around 100 Kms from Shillong has set the stage for the The Nongkhnum festival with a theme 'For Nature, Hope and life", an initiative undertaken by the local youths to lure tourist into this isle that has been free from the prying eyes of many tourist flowing into the state.

Announcing the two day festival scheduled from the 14th of December, the festival organizers on Tuesday announced that it will be a treat to the visitors. The organizers promised a gala time to any visitor, although it will come at a price of Rs 300 per day and Rs 500 for the two days. " The traditional himas (chiefdoms) from west Khasi Hills and South West Khasi Hills District will add to the glamour through their traditional dances, fables and storytelling besides the competition that will surrounded only on the indigenous instruments", stated Lumbor Mawsor . He also added there will be a bamboo climbing competition and the tug of war that will added further to the milieu.

Mawsor also said that there will be an eloquent of modern entertainment activities like beach futsal, adventure sports, beach futsal and off course the rock bands and DJs who will add to the splendor of the festival.

Notwithstanding the increasing popularity of Nongkhnum island for its beautiful picturesque that has been carved out by the two rivers- Kynshi and Phanliang , there has been numerous talks about the pathetic conditions of the 10 kms road from Nonstoin . However, the organizers said that there has been repaired works carried out where even the small cars can reached easily.
