North East Linguistic and Ethnic Coordination Committee for ordinance on Citizenship (Amendment) Bill

Silchar: Representatives of the North East Linguistic and Ethnic Coordination Committee (NELECC) on Wednesday submitted a memorandum to General (retired) Vijay Kumar Singh, Union Minister of State, Ministry of External Affairs, at Silchar requesting the Centre to promulgate an ordinance under Article 123. The delegation demanded the Citizenship Amendment Act by way of promulgating an ordinance ahead of dissolution of Lok Sabha and the impending lapse of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill. V K Singh was also the former Army Chief of India.

It has also been stated in the memorandum that lakhs of people of the State of Assam are apprehending that their names would be cut off and that they would be declared foreigners and stateless. The Bill which seeks to provide Indian citizenship to non Muslims from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan was passed by the Lok Sabha on January 8 last. However, it was not tabled by the government in the Rajya Sabha. The Budget Session was the last Parliament session of the present government. The delegation demanded for passing of the Bill and also for removal of Articles 370 and 35-A.
