Shillong: Students and teachers of North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) on Wednesday took out a protest rally against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016 at the university campus.

Nearly a thousand strong contingent of mostly NEHU students marched around the university campus shouting slogans like “Bangladeshis go back”, “Pakistani go back”, “Long live northeast” and “CAB down down”.

Also seen among the protesters were North Eastern Hill University Teachers Association president Professor Xavier P Mao and general secretary Dr Prasenjit Biswas.

Professor Mao said the primary interest of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government in passing the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill was to capture and stay in power. “This should be stopped,” he said.

Professor Mao also said the BJP should give due legitimacy to the sentiments of the people of the northeast.

Earlier, Rangdajied Marwein, advisor to the North Eastern Hill University Students’ Union said if the Centre was so interested in opening its heart to the illegal migrants then it should also feel for the millions who are hungry.

Marwein also said that the Bill should not be an option for the country as a whole because in the end it is the North-east which will bear the brunt of illegal immigrants.
