Noted historian Mushirul Hasan passes away at 69

Guwahati: Noted Indian historian Mushirul Hasan, whose extensive works on India’s Partition will remain ever memorable and unmatchable, passed away on Monday morning. Hasan, at the time of this death, was 69-year-old and is survived by his wife Zoya Hasan, a political scientist and academician.

The Aligarh Muslim University and the University of Cambridge alumnus, Mr. Hasan also was the Vice-Chancellor of the Jamia Millia Islamia University. In addition to that, he also served as the Director-General of the National Archives of India, and the President of the Indian History Congress.

Hasan’s untimely death could be linked to a road accident that he met in 2014 on his way to Mewat from Delhi when he was critically injured. It is since the accident that Hasan’s health declined.

The scholar would be particularly remembered for his book India Partition: The Other Face of Freedom wherein he has documented how Partition displaced millions and left behind a legacy of hostility and bitterness between the governments along with the people from India and Pakistan.

In another book by the historian, When Stone Walls Cry, he put light on the unknown facets of prison life of the Nehrus. He also wrote how Jawaharlal Nehru decided to guide India on to the world stage and thrived to make it a modern nation. This vision of Nehru was opposite to Mahatma Gandhi's imagination of Hind Swaraj.
