Notify Gorkhas As Indigenous Community: MP Ram Prasad Sharma

GUWAHATI: Tezpur MP Ram Prasad Sharma has written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding a notification declaring the Gorkha community of Assam as an indigenous community of the State so that they do not have to face the ignominy of being foreigners. In his letter, the MP Ram Prasad Sharma said that thousands of Gorkhas have not been included in the complete draft NRC labelling them as foreigners. “The Gorkhas are classified as doubtful citizens by the officials of the Assam Government, thereby causing immense hardships and mental torture to the members of the patriotic Gorkha community,” he said. The MP has further raised the demand for according ST status to the Gorkhas of Assam, a demand which has already been raised by the All Assam Gorkha Students’ Union and the Akhil Assam Gorkha Sanmilan.
