Now sanctuary to grow cocoon!

GUWAHATI, Feb 12: The Assam Government is going to raise a wild sanctuary to grow Muga cocoon. Participating in an AIR News talk show, Assam Handloom and Textile, Sericulture Minister Ranjit Dutta said that several steps are being taken to give more exposure to Muga, Eri and silk products. He said that 25 lakh trees will be planted to get Eri and Muga cocoons. According to him, the state government has undertaken ‘Assam Silk Outreach Mission’ to promote Muga, silk and Eri products. He said that yarn banks have been set up at nine districts, and remaining districts will be covered soon. According to him, stress has been given on skill development. The minister also said that the Assam Government would support entrepreneurs in Eri, Muga and silk. He said that a handloom park proposed to be set up in gaon district will benefit 20,000 people.  When asked on appointing a brand ambassador like the Tourism Department, the minister said that he is also thinking in this direction, and will discuss the issue with the Chief Minister.  Dutta, who is also holding the Irrigation portfolio, said that solar deep tube wells will be installed in irrigation projects. He said the users groups will be set up to monitor the schemes.
