NPP supports bandh call

SHILLONG, May 6: The Meghalaya State unit of the tiol People’s Party (NPP) has extended support to the 48-hr bandh called by the All A’chik Youth Federation (AAYF) in the Garo Hills region. It may be mentioned that the AAYF called for a bandh on May 19 and 20 in protest against the extension of the term of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) by the State government. In a statement issued by NPP spokesperson James Sangma, the party stated that it fully agreed with the views of the NGO. Sangma termed the concerns of the AAYF as valid in “light of the murder of democracy being carried out by the government” even as it stated that it is in this regard that the NPP supported the bandh call. According to the NPP, the manner in which the term of the GHADC has been extended is illegal and unconstitutiol.
