Bokajan, April 2: The AASAA (All Adivasi Students’ Association of Assam), Karbi Anglong district committee, in an emergency meeting held at its district office on Monday, expelled the organization’s general secretary Elias Tirkey for alleged extortion attempt involving five trucks laden with illegal liquor at Numaligarh in Golaghat district. Tirkey reportedly orchestrated an extortion bid to mint money from an inter-State racket of illegal liquor traders by detaining five trucks of liquor at Numuligarh on Saturday night. He was later arrested in a drunken state by Numuligarh police on charges of theft and extortion. The AASAA core committee expressed remorse over Tirkey’s conduct and expelled him from the primary membership of the student organization for a period of six years.
