Jyotirmoy Chakrabarty

Jyotirmoy Chakrabarty, IAS (retd), left for his heavenly abode late at night on April 16 after a brief illness at Guwahati. Born in Dewan tea estate of Cachar district in 1934, Late Chakrabarty joined the Assam Civil Service and was later elevated to the IAS. During his tenure in service, he served in important roles like Deputy Commissioner, Sivasagar; Secretary, Personnel; Advisor to Chief Minister; etc. While serving as Managing Director of West Assam Milk Producers’ Co- operative Union Ltd. (WAMUL), he coined ‘Purabi’ as the brand name for milk and dairy products manufactured by it, which continues to be in vogue.

Chakrabarty was known by his simplicity, honesty and amiable nature. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, a host of relatives and plenty of friends and well wishers. His son predeceased him.
