OFID to offer training to visually impaired

A REPORTER

SHILLONG: For the first time in Meghalaya and the entire North East region a new form of training will be provided to the visually impaired on echo location and navigational approach. This training will be carried out by a newly formed organization last year ‘Organization for Inclusive Development’ (OFID) founded by Thomas Tajo from Arunachal Pradesh in Shillong on October 1, 2018 and its Meghalaya chapter has eight members. “The objective of the OFID is to change the mindset of the society towards the visually impaired,” president of Meghalaya unit, Benistar Kharpor said.

National president Tajo who said he is “happily blind” pointed out that blind people can be taught navigational skills and not take the support of other people.

Speaking about echo location, he demonstrated with the clicking of his tongue and tried to understand the location they are in.

He has requested the government to provide the necessary funding to such approaches which are known to have scientific back-up.
