Online business hits retailers in Shillong

SHILLONG: The online business is growing fast as many people are buying clothes, shoes and other daily use products online, making business hard for retail market. With the growth of online business it also throws up plenty of new challenges and opportunities for entrepreneurs. Recently during the festive season of Christmas and New Year this scribe spoke with a few shop owners in major market places in Shillong at Iewduh and Police Bazar.

A shoe shop owner at Police Bazar said, “The number of people shopping online is increasing and this has greatly affected our business and this year the market has decreased.” He said last year during the festive season the number of customers visiting the shop were good but with the growth of online market the number of customers this year in particular has greatly decreased.

Another shop owner said, “In previous years say 5-6 years back during the festive season the staff didn’t have time to even rest as there was a rush of customers but now that has changed as there were lesser customers.” As the online market grows, and the ease and convenience of shopping online has more appeal to a greater audience, online shopping may one day take over the retail market.
