‘Only investigative journalism can bring social change’: Dr Sashi Kanta Saikia

TINSUKIA: “Only investigative journalism can bring social change. In the changing scenario, journalism has turned into a commodity keeping aside its ethics and objectives,” remarked Dr Sashi Kanta Saikia, Principal of DHSK College, Dibrugarh and a former journalist at a workshop organized at Tinsukia Press Club on Wednesday as part of its day-long 9th biennial conference.

He regretted that most of journalists did not possess the education to handle critical issues nor had any desire to study. “Some media houses are sole responsible for degradation of journalistic standard and indirectly encourage and compel the journalists to adopt malpractices,” Dr Saikia maintained.

The biennial conference began with smriti tarpan and hoisting of the Tinsukia Press Club flag. The programme also witnessed felicitation of former journalists, dramatists, writers and academicians. The delegate meeting was held in the evening with Md Hussain Khan, the president of Tinsukia Press Club, in chair where new office bearers were selected. Saroj Gohain and Pranab Phukan were unanimously selected as president and secretary respectively.
