Paul Lyngdoh accepts UDP’s decision to field Jemino from Shillong

2019 LS POLLS

A REPORTER

SHILLONG: Former MLA from West Shillong constituency Paul Lyngdoh has accepted the decision of the United Democratic Party (UDP) to field Dr. Jemino Mawthoh from Shillong Parliamentary constituency for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

Lyngdoh, who is the working president of UDP, was also seeking a party ticket to contest the MP polls.

“I welcome this decision of the party to field Mawthoh instead of me from Shillong Parliamentary constituency in the 2019 MP election,” Lyngdoh said.

He informed that Mawthoh had a few more supporters for his candidature than him to contest the MP election.

“I respect this decision which was made by many leaders in the party and I will not contest the MP election,” he said.

It may be mentioned that Mawthoh was selected as a party candidate to contest the LS polls in a party meeting held on October 31.

According to sources, a few party leaders had also suggested the name of Paul Lyngdoh. However, many others within the party opted for Mawthoh.

Despite having decided to field Mawthoh for the MP election, the UDP will have to discuss this matter in a meeting with its partners within the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) which includes the NPP, UDP, PDF, HSPDP, BJP, and the NCP as well as Independent MLAs. The coordination meeting of MDA is slated later this month.
