'PC market declines in India, HP still on top'

Mumbai, September 15: The combined desk-based and mobile PC market in India totaled nearly 2.2 million units in the second quarter of 2015, a 13 percent decrease over the second quarter of 2014, according to a report by market research firm Gartner. American global IT major Hewlett-Packard (HP) still maintained the top slot with 26.3 percent market share despite showing a decline of 6.1 percent. It had recorded 29.4 percent market share in the second quarter of 2014. “Consumers accounted for 48 percent of total PC sales in the second quarter of 2015,” said Gartner research director Vishal Tripathi. “In the absence of any substantial demand from enterprises this quarter, the Indian PC market performed dismally, re-emphasizing the fact that sentiments were not very positive in the second quarter of 2015. The enterprise segment might witness some growth going forward due to government and education projects, however there might not be a significant bounce back,” he added. According to Gartner, Lenovo experienced the largest increase in market share, accounting for 18.1 percent of PC shipments in India in the second quarter of 2015, up from 14 percent share in the same period last year. Its growth primarily came from the consumer PC segment where it grew by 59 percent. While Dell, which is second-seeded in the list, showed a growth of 2.7 percent in market share compared to the second quarter of 2014, Acer showed a decline of 3.1 percent. Also, assembled PCs, which accounted for 44 percent of the overall desktop market, declined 7 percent in the period under review. (IANS)
