FROM A CORRESPONDENT

SHILLONG, Oct 13:  The People’s Democratic Party (PDF) on Friday unveiled its symbol ahead of the 2018 Assembly elections.

Earlier this month, while accepting the registration of PDF, the Election Commission of India allotted “candles” as symbol to the party. The Election Commission issued the symbol to the PDF on 3rd October and the party was informed on 9th October.

However, the party stated that even though candles has been allotted to the PDF, but in constituencies where the party may not field candidates, Independent candidates can use candles as their symbols.

The unveiling of the election symbol of the PDF was attended by the party MDCs, ticket aspirants and members.

“With the allotment of a symbol to the PDF, our party has now become complete,” party president Ivanlum Marbaniang said during a function at the party’s office in Nongrim Hills locality.

The general secretary of the party, Auspicious Lyngdoh, said the manifesto of the party is being put together and experts as well as youth are involved in the process.

Lyngdoh also informed the gathering that the candidates will be announced once the election committee is formed.

“As of now we are in the process of forming the district committees. Once this is done we will have the election committee, who will decide on the candidates,” the PDF general secretary said.

The party also said that it is hopeful of fielding candidates in all the 36 seats of Khasi-Jaintia Hills and also contest in Garo Hills. The Garo Hill region has 24 seats.

Even though it is spreading its wings in the Khasi-Jaintia Hills region, the party as of now only “plans” to visit the Garo Hills region.

The general secretary of the PDF stated that as part of their plans to spread their wings in Khasi-Jaintia Hills region, party leaders will be visiting Mairang constituency to form the zol committee on 16th October and 21st October in rtiang constituency.
