Peace agreement inked to curb boundary conflicts

Itanagar, July 2: In order to curb conflicts and tensions along Assam-Arunachal inter-state boundary, a historic peace agreement was inked at Likabali in Lower Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh on June 30 last.

The Likabali declaration was inked between Galo Welfare Society (GWS) representing the Galo community of the district and Mising Bane Kebang (MBK), representing the Mishing community of Dhemaji district in Assam.

Lawmakers from both the State including Nari-Koyu MLA Kento Rina, Likabali MLA Kardo Nyicyor both representing Arunachal Pradesh and Dhemaji (Assam) MLA Bhuban Pegu who were present on the occasion endorsed the declaration, a press release informed here on Monday.

The meeting while observing the fact that both Mising and Galos share a common ancestor, decided to constitute the Galo-Mising Coordination Committee (GMCC), which would sort out any dispute between individuals of both communities residing along the inter-state boundaries through dialogue and without or minimal interference from the administration.

The GMCC would also act as medium for promoting brotherhood, cultural exchanges, facilitate celebration of pan festivals – Ali Aye Ligang and Mopin, promote trade & commerce along inter-state boundary, facilitate formation of a research & development committee to explore and propagate rich cultural and ancestral history of both the communities. It was unanimously agreed that both communities’ representatives would mutually recognise and respect rights of possession over respective land and properties and there shall be no trespasses or encroachment henceforth.

It was also decided to uphold the decisions of Gogamukh meeting held on June 13 last, wherein it was decided that the GWS and MBK would come to the aid of each other community members to protect from prejudice and discrimination in their respective areas.

The meeting was in continuation of peace effort initiated at Dirpai in Assam’s Gogamukh after skirmish between Galos of Hime village and Misings of Dirpai on June 7 last, the release added.
