Phase I of Assam Panchayat poll: 44,731 file nomination papers

GUWAHATI: As many as 44,731 nomination papers have been filed for the phase I of the panchayat poll slated to be held on December 5, 2018 in the State. Monday being the last date for withdrawal of nomination papers, candidates to be in fray for the first phase of the poll will be known on Tuesday or the day after. Marked fall has been noticed in the filing of nominations for the phase I of the poll. Talking to The Sentinel, State Election Commissioner HN Bora said: “While eight hundred and eighty-one nominations have been filed against 251 zila parishad constituencies (ZPCs), 3,935 nominations have been filed against 1,304 AP members and 4,492 nominations against 1,304 GP presidents and 35,423 nominations filed against 13,040 GP members in the phase 1 of the poll. The number of nomination papers filed for phase I of the poll is less than what it was in the last panchayat poll.” The scrutiny of nomination papers for the second phase of the poll slated to be held on December 9, 2018 is on Tuesday.
