PIL hearing on Meghalaya-Assam boundary dispute on April 26

SHILLONG: Knun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) candidate for the upcoming Lok Sabha election scheduled for April 11, THS Bonny on Saturday informed that the Supreme Court will hold its first hearing on the boundary dispute between Meghalaya and Assam on April 26.

It may be mentioned that Bonny had filed a PIL at the Supreme Court earlier this year concerning this issue.

Addressing reporters on Saturday, Bonny said, “The positive from the PIL is that the Supreme Court has directed all the three parties (Central Government, Assam and Meghalaya Government) to reply in front of the court concerning this issue on April 26.

Bonny also urged the State Government to take up this matter seriously especially as an opportunity has been presented to discuss this issue with other parties concern with an objective to remove this problem of the boundary dispute completely.

“If there is no interstate boundary dispute then the residents residing at the border area between Meghalaya and Assam will be able to have peace and tranquillity without having to deal with any problem,” he said.

When asked, he informed that the PIL was filed by him in January this year.

Meanwhile, KHNAM president Adebert Nongrum said, “This issue of boundary dispute has been taken up by me in the Legislative Assembly and I had asked for a time-bound initiative from the government to resolve this issue. However, till date, there has not been any move from the present government to take up this issue seriously.”
