Shillong: After a long wait, Meghalaya now has a chairperson of the Lokayukta (an anti-corruption ombudsman).

On Tuesday, former judge of Gauhati High Court, Pranoy Kumar Musahary was sworn in as the first chairperson of the Meghalaya Lokayukta, at the Raj Bhavan by Governor Tathagata Roy.

It may be mentioned that the Meghalaya Lokayukta Bill, 2014 was passed in the state Assembly on March 7, 2014, by the then Congress-led Meghalaya United Alliance (MUA) government.

Speaking to media persons after his swearing in, Musahary appealed to the people of the state to come forward and file complaints of people indulging in corrupt practices.

“I appeal to the public to cooperate with the Lokayukta by filing complaints about such people who indulge in corrupt practices,” the former Judge of Gauhati High Court said.

The Chairperson of the Meghalaya Lokayukta also urged the state government to speed up the appointment of the other four members of the anti-corruption ombudsman.

Musahary said, “I will request the government to appoint the officers like the secretary to the commission and some officers in the rank of Superintendent of Police, who will make the preliminary inquiry about the allegations made in the complaint.”

Those present during the swearing-in of Musahary included state Tourism minister, Metbah Lyngdoh, Education minister, Lahkmen Rymbui and Leader of Opposition in Meghalaya Assembly, Dr Mukul Sangma besides civil and police officers.

However, Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma, Home Minister, James K Sangma and Assembly Speaker, Dr Donkupar Roy did not attend the swearing-in ceremony.

It may be mentioned that Musahary was appointed as Chairperson of Meghalaya Lokayukya after the Supreme Court directed the state to complete the process of constituting the Lokayukta at the earliest. A select committee had agreed on the name of Musahary, as the Lokayukta Chairperson in July this year.
