Plea to resolve problems of tea estate workers in Lakhipur

Silchar, July 7: Residents and tea garden labourers of Lakhipur sub-division are facing many problems and it seems there lays no solution to it. In view of the problems, Biplab Kumar Goswami, general secretary, central committee, Grahak Surakhsa Samiti, Cachar in behalf of those innumerable sufferers, has asked the new government to look into the matter and have catalogued the problems being faced by the people of Lakhipur. A meeting, presided by nda Karmakar, leader of the labourers, attended by a large number of people was organized recently at Lakhipur.

 nda Karmakar threw light on the plight of customers who are deprived of their basic rights. They are not getting the food items in proper measures as prescribed by the tiol Food Security Act. Such exploitation has made life miserable for them. Garden labourers are wooed by the false promises made during the time of elections. But, nothing significant thing can been done for them. He said that since no one cares for them, the tea labourers have also submitted to their fate. Dirty politics is being played in the me of distribution of food security cards. The food items are not distributed according to the government’s prescribed quantity. It has been stated that a situation has come when labourers are working without drawing any wages.

 Karmakar said that Grahak Surakhsa Samiti has been protesting against the atrocities being inflicted upon the helpless workers. Nitan Roy, convener, Binkandie ghat Surakhsa Samiti, said, “Residents of Binkandie Ghat Gaon Panchayat are living in the fear of a mafia of tricksters and thus are uble to communicate their problems. They are not given rice according to the quantity prescribed. This has been occurring since last 20 years and surprisingly no one has protested against it.”

 Dinobondhu Chakraborty, general secretary of Binkandie tea estate added that corruption has been plaguing Lakhipur sub-division since the time of the former government. Quite surprisingly, the former government did not pay any heed to it nor probed into the matter.

Grahak Surakhsa Samiti has requested the present government to investigate the matter at the earliest; otherwise, the situation may deteriorate. It has been stated that these scandalous activities related to distribution of food items should be stopped.
