Plea to stop witch-hunt

DOOMDOOMA, Aug 22: A three-member delegation of Elora Bigyan Mancha (EBM), Doomdooma Sakha comprising president Jhikanda Borgohain, vice-president Arjun Baruah and secretary Tarini Deka  submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner (DC), Tinsukia on Monday demanding a stop in witch-hunting related killings in the district.   While condemning the incident of brutal killing of two tea-workers mely, Dilip Kishan (55) and his wife Sivaratri Kishan (50) on the night of August 15 on suspicion of practicing witchcraft, by the fellow tea-workers in Line No. 10 of Hansara Division under Doomdooma Police Station, EBM demanded in the memorandum that the culprits should be brought to book and adequate compensation should be given to the next of kin of the deceased. At the same time it was pointed out in the memorandum that an awareness campaign should be carried out in the workers’ lines of the tea-gardens like Hansara, Deamoolie, Koomsong and Tippuk tea estates and in the interior villages where such incidents have occurred in the past.
