PM’s Slur on Rajiv Gandhi Irks Congress Leaders & Cadres

GUWAHATI: The State Congress party members staged a protest in front of the party head quarter at ABC on Monday over the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s comment against former Minister Rajiv Gandhi. Addressing a rally, Modi said, “Your father was termed ‘Mr Clean’ by his courtiers, but his life ended as ‘Bhrashtachari No 1’ [corrupt No 1].”

The Congress party members sought an apology for the comment and said that it was not suitable for a civilized society. Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia, severely condemning Modi’s remarks said, “Mere words are inadequate to condemn the distasteful comment made at an election rally last Saturday against former Prime Minister and Congress leader, Rajiv Gandhi, by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi who seems to have lost his equilibrium at the prospect of impending electoral defeat. It is extremely unfortunate that Modi has disregarded the Election Commission’s Model Code of Conduct for political gain and not hesitated to lower the dignity of the Prime Minister’s office. The very act of stating “his (Rajiv Gandhi’s) life ended as bhrastachari No. 1” reveals that Modi is unacquainted with cultured behavior and courtesy. Modi’s comment also reveals that apart from being rude, he is mendacious as well. The Delhi High Court had long back dismissed as unfounded the allegations against Rajiv Gandhi in the Bofors case and, significantly, the then NDA government headed by Late Atal Behari Vajpayee had not challenged the verdict. It is the vindictive Modi government which tried to reopen the case in November, 2018 but failed to convince the Supreme Court. In view of these facts, I believe that the use of the term ‘bhrastachari’ by Modi is not only a white lie but is also tantamount to contempt of court.”

“In my opinion, Modi needs to learn from the restrained and courteous reactions from Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra to the calumny heaped on their martyred father by the incumbent Prime Minister. A person who does not know how to respect martyred leader of our nation can never uphold the self-esteem and prestige of the country. Regardless of the motivated attack by Modi, the people of India will always remember Rajiv Gandhi with affection and respect because, among various welfare measures, he introduced the Panchayati Raj system for the welfare of rural folk, enabled India to match stride with the rest of the world by spearheading the information Technology revolution and set up Navodaya schools in each district of various states to provide free education to needy children”, Saikia said.
